Feminism Is: Kristin Beck – Mission Minded

September 26, 2014

For 20 years, Kristin Beck lived as a Navy SEAL named Christopher, but today she calls that alter ego the “angry bearded Viking.” Now she is the featured personality behind the new film, Lady Valor, which aims to shine the light on transgendered service members in the United States’ armed forces as well as the specific challenges they (and other transgendered citizens) face.

“It’s all about the mission for me, and the end result is just treat me as a human, dignity and respect. I don’t want special treatment. I just want a chance. At least give me opportunity. Everything I did for 20 years as a SEAL was for freedom and equality.”

After retiring from the military and transitioning to female, Kristin is taking that fight to a new battlefield: Capitol Hill.
