As I looked over the commemorative stamps available for purchase at the post office I asked the female clerk across the counter, “Are you old enough to remember Shirley Chisholm? Or did you learn about her in school?”
“No, I don’t think so,” she said, shaking her head.
“That is a real shame,” I said, shaking mine.
The fact that a woman of the intensity and courage of Shirley Chisholm is not widely known is tragic. We could all learn much from the way she lived her life. So today, forty-four years after she announced her candidacy for president, I wanted to remember her, here on Link of the Day.
“Forty-four years ago this week, Shirley Chisholm made history as she announced her candidacy for the White House. Her bid for the top job was short lived, but the symbolism is as powerful today as it was then.” Click here to read the BBC News’ article, “Before Hillary Clinton, there was Shirley Chisholm.“
Watch this YouTube video featuring her presidential announcement speech. And while you’re on YouTube, listen to more of her words.
Oh, and tell your younger friends about this amazing woman. We can’t let her be forgotten.
