A Little Help from Our Friends

This short Link of the Day features Taylor Swift’s recent decision to identify with the feminist movement. Swift indicates that she always leaned toward equality among the sexes, but didn’t readily identify with a feminist movement due to the inaccurate and negative stereotypes imposed by conservative culture. It was only after her friend, screenwriter and director, Lena Dunham, honestly engaged with her that Swift began to understand:

Becoming friends with Lena – without her preaching to me, but just seeing why she believes what she believes, why she says what she says, why she stands for what she stands for – has made me realize that I’ve been taking a feminist stance without actually saying so.
