Sex and Violence Go to Church: Breaking the Habits of Machismo

Suzanne Ross of The Raven Foundation analyzes the way current world conflicts often use violence against women’s bodies as a means of communication among men. While much of this in inherent in patriarchal systems, she argues that the export of the ideal of American machismo in movies and other media forms is fueling the current increase in this behavior. Churches, she ascertains, need to go beyond just speaking out about the violence against women to changing the ideals and systems that perpetuate it.
