What did Eve want?

The story of Eve is often used as a means of claiming that women cannot be trusted to make good decisions. This disparagement of women is often mixed in with messages about women’s sexuality being the problem.

Greg Carey writes for ON Scripture that Genesis tells us that Eve’s real desire was for wisdom and that the story tells us that she actually got what she wanted! In learning the difference between good and evil, she grew into human maturity.

“Eve’s choice embodies all the complications of human maturity. Contrary to her representation at the hands of the advertisers and some preachers alike, Eve seeks wisdom – and she finds it. In her choice, we face life and mortality in all their complication.”
