by Bethany Lee

In the last hour before giving birth
When pain blazed high
and shadowed everything
beyond its brilliant flare
I couldn’t remember why
I was giving my life away
I lost hold of all I thought I could keep
Lost all hope for what was to be
The knowing of what I had come to do
Turned to ashes on the fading embers
The one within me remembered
The one within me remembers
What a powerful poem, Bethany! The mother’s forgetting vs the baby’s remembering is stunning!
I’m so grateful for your poetry dear friend. Thank you for putting words to big emotions.
