When something new is on the way

by Bethany Lee

Sparkler in a hand with blurry lights in the background

In the last hour before giving birth
When pain blazed high
and shadowed everything
beyond its brilliant flare
I couldn’t remember why
I was giving my life away

I lost hold of all I thought I could keep
Lost all hope for what was to be
The knowing of what I had come to do
Turned to ashes on the fading embers
The one within me remembered
The one within me remembers

Bethany Lee, author of The Breath Between and Etude for Belonging from Fernwood Press, lives in Lafayette, OR, at the edge of the woods. Her writing is inspired by the space at the edge—her experiences as a hospice harpist, a year spent traveling at sea, and the deep silence of her Quaker practice.
