Oriented to Love – Of the Mystery and Miracles

Posted February 8, 2014 by Marg Herder

The Door to the Chapel - Photo by Marg HerderI have been in Philadelphia participating in the Oriented to Love Dialog sponsored by Evangelicals for Social Action.  This dialog is a three day discussion of LGBTQ issues and the church.  The people attending represent a wide spectrum of opinion on the issues involved.

The people attending also represent 13 unique, precious, and gloriously beautiful manifestations of Divinity.

I was asked to prepare one of the daily devotions.  It was my privilege to do so and I wanted to share part of it with you.

Of the Mystery and Miracles

When we stop paying attention to the mystery and the miracles of God
When we ignore what we cannot describe, cannot understand, cannot categorize, or explain
When we ignore that
We ignore God
Because God is not our logical, ordered existence
God is not the sure thing, the safe bet
God doesn’t make sense
God doesn’t dream safe and steady dreams for our lives
God doesn’t move us in comfortable directions

God inhabits the areas just off the map
The areas just outside the margins of certainty

God breathes into our lives and makes crazy things happen
Things that make you shake your head and laugh nervously
Things that make other people wonder about you
Things that feel like they will ruin you
Things that raise the hair on the back of your neck
Things that make you weep tears that feel beyond joy

God calls us to love, really love, those people who no one else can
God calls us to speak love’s name, when no one else will
God calls us to carry love into places and situations where no one else would think to go

God dissolves away all of our carefully crafted constructions, fences, foundations, boxes and               boundaries
And turns us toward the waters of love

God says, build your church here
And when we look confused, seeing no rock, no island, no solid ground
God points toward the vast waters of love
And says again, build your church here

And if you happen to remember that we all come from God
From the mysterious and miraculous
And we all return to God
To the mysterious and miraculous
If you just happen to remember that long enough
And if you are not too afraid
You just might walk into those waters of love
And learn that sink, swim, or walk on water
None of that really matters
Because no one ever drowns in the waters of love
No one is ever swallowed by the mystery
No one is ever denied becoming their own miracle.
