Today’s link comes from Francine Lacqua, editor for Bloomberg Television, who recently was part of a panel on “Women in Business” at the Women of the World (WOW) Festival (part of International Women’s Day gatherings). In this short write-up of her experience at the event, Ms. Lacqua relates how encouraged she was from interacting with other like-minded and powerful women who never lost their wit and humor even in the face of systemic inequality.
Ms. Lacqua’s blog entry offers a host of concise experiences, victories, and fearless moves on the part of women in different fields, as well as some of the best advice they picked up in their journeys. One common theme emerged among them, though, and that was the need for a certain kind of encourager:
“The advice on how to get ahead in the business world varied, but all agreed on the need for mentors or sponsors. Gail suggested we need to change the language around mentoring, saying, in her experience, women need sponsors but don’t always want mentors. ‘Mentors listen, sponsors advocate.’ “
Let the advocacy continue!
