Feminism Is— Larycia Hawkins: Standing up for Religious Tolerance

December 18, 2015

“Larycia Hawkins, an associate professor of political science at Wheaton College, was placed on administrative leave on Tuesday after suggesting that believers in the two faiths do indeed follow the same God. Hawkins has also been wearing a hijab—the headscarf worn by many Muslim women—as a gesture of what she calls “embodied solidarity” with Muslims this month.” – from The Atlantic article “The Professor Suspended for Saying Muslims and Christians Worship One God.”

The professor said on her Facebook page (scroll down on her page to see the December 10 post), “I stand in religious solidarity with Muslims because they, like me, a Christian, are people of the book. And as Pope Francis stated last week, we worship the same God.”

Students are turning out to support Dr. Hawkins.  Read more in this WPVI TV article.

Here’s a Faithful America petition some may be interested in signing.  The petition reads, “Showing solidarity and kindness towards Muslims facing persecution is profoundly Christlike. Please reinstate Larycia Hawkins immediately.”

Lē Weaver identifies as a non-binary writer, musician, and feminist spiritual seeker. Their work draws attention to: the ongoing trauma experienced by women and LGBTQIA people in this “Christian” society; Christ/Sophia’s desire that each of us move deeper into our own practice of non-violence; and the desperate need to move away from an androcentric conception of God.
