On June 30, 2023, the US Supreme Court ruled in 303 Creative LLC vs. Elenis that certain businesses with religious objections to the LGBTQIA+ community can refuse service based on “free speech” grounds.
The Unitarian Universalist Association, “the central organization for the Unitarian Universalist (UU) religious movement in the United States,” was among the first religious organizations to publicly express condemnation of this decision.
The UUA’s outgoing president, Rev. Dr. Susan Frederick-Gray, is quoted in the response as saying, “The Supreme Court’s decision today will harm LGBTQIA+ families and communities. As UUs, we are committed to supporting them as we see forces working to diminish their rights.”
“The Court’s decision opens the door to any business that claims to provide customized services to discriminate against historically-marginalized groups. The decision is fundamentally misguided. We will continue to fight to defend laws against discrimination from those who seek a license to discriminate.” (From the ACLU response to the decision, read it here.)
