The Impact of Sexual Violence

April 19, 2017

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.  CFT’s Link of the Day blog will feature a variety of posts about this issue during the month.

“Nearly 1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men are victims of rape (Black et al., 2011). But all of us are impacted by sexual violence. That’s because sexual violence affects communities and society — in addition to survivors and their loved ones.”

Read the National Sexual Violence Resource Center’s document, “The Impact of Sexual Violence.

“Every incident of child sexual abuse has been estimated to cost the victim and society at least $99,000 and estimates of the toll for every adult rape ranges from $47,000 to $60,000.”

Read “Understanding the Impact of Sexual Assult: The Nature of Traumatic Experience” by Sandra L. Bloom, M.D. This long essay on the multi-dimensional impact of sexual violence is a chapter from the book, Sexual Assault: Victimization across the Lifespan.
