Rev. Dr. David Weekley — Transgender Awareness Week (#TransWeek)

November 14, 2017

Rev. Dr. David Weekley is the only openly-out transgender elder appointed to a UMC church.

His 2011 book, In from the Wilderness: Sherman: She-r-man, is a must-read for those interested in the transgender Christian experience, and features a forward written by our own Virginia Ramey Mollenkott.  Weekley’s most recent book, Retreating Forward: A Spiritual Practice with Transgender Persons, is based on his doctoral research and designed to provide “practical and spiritual sustenance” for “individuals, spiritual leaders, and faith communities.”

Lē Weaver identifies as a non-binary writer, musician, and feminist spiritual seeker. Their work draws attention to: the ongoing trauma experienced by women and LGBTQIA people in this “Christian” society; Christ/Sophia’s desire that each of us move deeper into our own practice of non-violence; and the desperate need to move away from an androcentric conception of God.
